Day-by-Day – 7-Day Wild & Free Tanzania Great Migration Safari
Track the Great Migration across Central & Northern Serengeti, then descend into Ngorongoro Crater – all in one compact week that balances game drives, scenic drives and lodge comfort.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet our representative and transfer to your lodge in Arusha. Settle in, enjoy a relaxing dinner and prepare for the start of your Great Migration adventure.
After breakfast, drive to Serengeti National Park via the scenic Masai countryside. Your first game drive starts as you enter the park. Central Serengeti (Seronera) is renowned for one of Africa’s highest densities of big cats – lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Highlights: First Serengeti game drive • Afternoon in predator-rich Seronera Valley.
Enjoy game viewing en-route as you head towards the Northern Serengeti, the heart of the Great Migration river-crossing zone around the Mara River.
Highlights: Full-day game drive from central plains to rocky, river-filled north • High chance of seeing large herds moving towards the river.
Spend the entire day exploring the Mara River region. With patience (and luck), you may witness the dramatic river crossings where hundreds or thousands of wildebeest and zebra plunge into crocodile-filled waters.
Why Northern Serengeti: Only place in Tanzania where river crossings occur • Lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and crocodiles are very active during migration. Your guide will follow herd movements for the best chances.
Take an early morning game drive as you exit the north, watching for predators feeding after an active night. Continue back to Central Serengeti with game drives on the way.
Even beyond the migration herds, Central Serengeti remains superb for resident lion prides, high leopard densities and the year-round Seronera River ecosystem.
After breakfast, drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descend 600 metres into the crater, often called the world’s largest natural wildlife arena.
The crater floor hosts black rhino, lions, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, seasonal flamingos and a mix of forest, swamp, grassland and lakes. Enjoy an unhurried crater tour with packed lunch, then proceed to Karatu for dinner and rest.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast, then drive back through the highlands and Maasai plains towards Arusha / Kilimanjaro. You will be dropped at the airport for your international flight or onward connection – with a memory card full of Great Migration moments.
